Tribute – Rev. Mallela Daveedu Garu (మల్లెల దావీదు)

The history of Rev. Mallela Daveedu, a renowned Telugu Christian hymn writer, is as follows: Rev. Mallela Daveedu (August 6, 1890 – May 17, 1971) was a prominent figure in the field of Telugu Christian hymns. He was born in Chimmannabanda village in Nursaraopet Taluka on August 6, 1890. His parents were Rev. Issaku and Rebekah. They worked as Vedic teachers in Ramaipatnam, where he completed his Vedic studies and became a Vedic scholar. Rev. Mallela Daveedu was associated with the Telugu Christian literary movement and contributed significantly to the development of hymns. Apart from writing hymns, he organized music workshops during festivals to teach the proper way of singing each song in the appropriate raga and rhythm. He was a skilled orator as well. In 1937, Rev. Mallela Daveedu, along with Rev. M. L. Dolbeer and Rev. B. Hebbi Davis, compiled the “Andhra Christian Hymnal,” a collection of Telugu Christian hymns. Some of Rev. Mallela Daveedu’s notable works include “Jubilee Navaratnamala,” “Jagajjayamu,” “Asprishyata,” “Amma Kokkoroko,” “Andhramatha,” “Duratma,” “Balaprarthana Padyalu,” “Samuelu Charitra,” “Yona Kathavalu,” “Artha Bhanu Natyam,” “Kavya Chandrika” (a book on literary analysis), “Jagadrakshan” (a novel), “Panchatantram” (a novel), “Sakshi-Bhagavanmukti,” “Sakshi-Bhagavadukti,” and “Sakshi-Bhagavadbhakti” (Vedanta scriptures). Rev. Mallela Daveedu passed away on May 17, 1971. He left behind a rich legacy of hymns, children’s stories, and patriotic song. For more information on the history of Rev.
