James (1:22-24) - Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror
24 and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
Author: Evangelist Sushanth Daniel
The Book of James presents a vivid comparison of a man looking into a unique mirror that reflects the state of his soul, rather than his physical appearance. The analogy between the ancient practice of gazing at water’s surface and the modern routine of looking at our reflections on glass screens highlights a spiritual dimension.
James urges us to examine our inner selves and emphasizes the importance of aligning our actions with the divine word. The divine mirror reflects our adherence to the teachings of God. Listening attentively but neglecting to embody its truths is deceiving. It deceives our souls. Forgetting the wisdom and teachings we have heard is failing to internalize them.
The contrast between hearing and doing is crucial for spiritual growth. The passage warns against hypocrisy in counselling others but struggles to apply the same principles in our own lives. This challenge has been present since ancient times. Embrace a transformative shift from hearers to doers. Faith should mirror our inner transformation.
This message extends an invitation to a higher commitment. When we allow the word of God to soak every aspect of our existence, we emerge as living testimonies to its power. We stand as living mirrors, reflecting His light, grace, and love to a world in need.

The Parable of the Two Sons (Matthew 21:28-32) presents a situation where a father asks his two sons to work in the vineyard. The first son initially refuses but later regrets his response and goes to the vineyard as asked, while the second son politely agrees but does not fulfill his promise. Jesus uses this parable to demonstrate that the first son, despite his initial refusal, ultimately did the will of his father by obeying his instructions.
This parable aligns with James’ call for believers to be “doers of the word,” emphasizing the importance of putting faith into action. It highlights that merely expressing faith or making promises without corresponding actions is incomplete. The parable encourages us to reflect the transformative power of God’s word in our lives through our actions and be living testimonies of the teachings we hold dear, bringing God’s truth to light in the world.
Prayer: Our Heavenly Father, Transform our hearts and actions through Your word. May we move beyond hearing to doing, reflecting Your truth in our lives. Illuminate the state of our souls like a mirror, guiding us to genuine transformation. Empower us to break free from empty rituals, embracing an active and vibrant faith. Let our deeds mirror Your love, shining brightly in a world seeking Your presence.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
