Turning the Other Cheek

Matthew- (5:39) - "But I say to you, That ye resist not evil: but whoever shall strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also."

Author: Evangelist Sushanth Daniel

The words of Jesus in Matthew 5:39 urge us to embrace a higher standard of living in a revenge-oriented culture.

A slap can cause physical pain, redness, swelling, and bruising. It can also lead to emotional and psychological distress, causing humiliation. In the context of Matthew 5:39, turning the other cheek represents a non-violent response to mistreatment, highlighting love and non-retaliation.

Jesus introduced the concept of turning the other cheek, which challenges the notion of strength equating to
force. This act of non-violent resistance is not a passive surrender but rather a powerful way to disarm oppressors and create lasting change.

This teaching is still important today. Turning the other cheek can help heal and reconcile in a world filled with
misunderstandings, conflicts, and divisions. It can make a difference in personal relationships, societal struggles, and even international disputes.

As we meditate on the words of Matthew 5:39, let us challenge ourselves to apply its sound wisdom in our daily lives.
Let us be courageous in our vulnerability, revolutionize in our love, and unwavering in our commitment to turning the other cheek. By doing so, we embrace the transformative power of Christ’s teachings and contribute to a
world shaped by compassion, understanding, and peace.

Responding with kindness and compassion to someone who picks at and mocks you at work can transform your relationship and the atmosphere around you.

How Turning the Other Cheek Can Change Lives!

Ruby, a devout woman, lived in a small village in Magnolia, embodying the teachings of Jesus. An altercation emerged between Ruby’s family and another village family.  Tensions heightened, resulting in hurtful exchanges. The dispute appeared to be progressing irreversibly, as both families adamantly held their ground. In the midst of chaos, Ruby recollected Jesus’ words from Matthew 5:39 and felt a resolute calling to approach the conflict differently. Guided by the principles of love and non-violence, she decided to refrain from further instigating the dispute and instead opted to “turn the other cheek.”

Instead of retaliating with insults or accusations, Ruby pursued a path of reconciliation. She made a compassionate gesture by visiting the other family, carrying a gift symbolizing peace and humility. With an open heart, she attentively listened to their grievances, acknowledging their emotions without becoming defensive. Ruby’s unexpected actions left the family astounded. Her display of
love and empathy, rather than responding in kind to hostility, disarmed them completely.

Ruby’s remarkable approach initiated the erosion of resentful barriers. Consistently turning the other cheek, she became a beacon of inspiration for others in the community, prompting them to reassess their own reactions to conflicts. Gradually, tensions subsided, paving the way for the village to embark on a restorative journey.

Ruby’s family’s bitter feud turned into a story of reconciliation and unity, thanks to Ruby’s commitment to turning the other cheek. Her actions restored peace to her community and left a lasting impact on witnesses. Ruby’s story teaches us that choosing to respond with love and resilience in conflict shows true strength and has the power to heal wounds and repair relationships.

Prayer: Our Heavenly Father, grant us the courage to embrace your teachings and turn the other cheek when faced with adversity. Help us replace revenge with love, retaliation with compassion. May we be vessels of your transformative grace, contributing to a world where understanding and peace prevail.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
