Craving Solid Food: Moving Beyond Basic Faith

Author: Evangelist Sushanth Daniel

Growing up, many of us remember commercials like “Boost is the secret of my energy,” promoting milk supplements to help us grow strong and healthy. Just as these supplements supported our physical development, the basics of the Gospel serve as the foundation for our spiritual growth. However, the time comes when we must move beyond these elementary teachings.

The author of Hebrews urges us to reflect on our spiritual maturity:

“Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” (Hebrews 5:13-14, NIV)

Like children who eagerly expect the transition from milk to solid food, we too should seek to advance beyond the elementary teachings of our faith. While the Gospel is essential, it is only the beginning. The Hebrew author calls us to a higher level of spiritual maturity, urging us to explore deeper and grow in our understanding.

Without spiritual maturity, our faith is still lukewarm. As Jesus warned the church in Laodicea:

So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:16)

A lack of spiritual discipline and knowledge of God’s Word can leave us stagnant, only turning to God in times of crisis. Yet, God desires more from us—He wants us to be mature, consistent believers ready to teach and lead others. The Hebrew author reminds us that we should have progressed beyond basic teachings and be prepared to teach others by now (Hebrews 5:12).

Craving Solid Food in Faith

Just as we sought growth and advancement in our academic and professional lives, we should apply the same principle to our spiritual lives. What holds us back from moving beyond elementary faith? Often, we view investing in God’s Kingdom as a waste of time and energy. We are still stagnant, but the Bible tells us there is a great harvest, and the laborers are few (Matthew 9:37). If we stay at the elementary level, how will we fulfill God’s call to be laborers?

We are accountable to God, and advancing in our spiritual walk brings profound joy, much like the pride we feel when advancing from grade school to university.

Heeding the Call to Spiritual Maturity

The time to awaken from our spiritual slumber is now. The author of Hebrews emphasizes that spiritual maturity comes from training and practice. We must commit to growing in our faith, discerning good from evil, and becoming effective vessels in God’s Kingdom. We cannot remain at the elementary stage and expect to be effective laborers for Christ.

Will you commit to advancing God’s Kingdom? Will you crave solid food and strive for spiritual maturity? Let’s discipline ourselves to move beyond the basics and explore the greater horizons God has for us.

My Spiritual Journey

When I first embraced Christ, my faith was like spiritual milk—simple and basic. I attended church, read the Bible occasionally. Realizing the need for deeper growth, I sought mentors—experienced believers who provided guidance and accountability. Their support helped me transition from basic teachings to a deeper understanding of Scripture.

I began attending Bible study, embraced prayer and reflection, and practiced spiritual disciplines like fasting and worship. Serving others became a natural extension of my growing faith, and I took part in seminars to expand my knowledge.

Regularly assessing my spiritual practices helped me avoid stagnation, and sharing my journey with others reinforced my learning and supported their growth. Thanks to my mentors and proactive efforts, my faith has matured beyond the basics, highlighting the importance of continual growth in our walk with God.
